My First Blog Post

Black and Tan dogs

Be yourself; Everyone else is already taken.

— Oscar Wilde.

My name is Rosarie Falvey and this is my very first blog. I want to share the joy and

love of owning and caring for dogs of black and tan breed of which there are many. Their beautiful personality and loyalty.

Dogs in Irish Folklore

Dogs have always been seen as not only loyal companions but also as protectors of both our homes and livestock and were historically used in times of war and also in helping with hunting.

The wolfhound, the oldest Irish breed was once a status symbol owned only by Kings, used for hunting the wolves that once roamed our country. The hound has a prominent place in our Folklore, myths and legends. Both in Ireland and UK we share the belief that dogs are capable of seeing supernatural beings.  A dog was said to be seeing a spirit when it was staring into the distance, but not harmful if the dog was not scared. There is a belief that the dog could protect against the influences of the other world and in the Brehon laws anyone who killed a dog belonging to a woman who was in labour, had to pay for a priest to stand over the woman and read the scriptures, day and night, until the labour was over to keep her safe from otherworldly influences

love of Black and Tans

At the beginning of January, 2006 a friend of mine told me of a little puppy who was abandoned after Christmas and thrown out with the rubbish once the festivities were over. About him being out in the cold and pouring rain post Christmas and how he did not move from the same spot he must have been dumped. I had just lost another dog I had and said I would take him. My husband went and collected him and when they returned home it was love at first sight. The puppy was a lovely black and tan and looked as if he had been painted with a paint brush. All tan on bottom and black shiny coat on top. Even when his tail was raised the under part was tan to match the rest of his body. It was love at first sight. We named him Rog and had him for six and a half years losing him to cancer in 2013. Our hearts were broken at his loss. He was such a character and demanded our attention and the house was so lonely after his parting.

My husband read in the papers of black and tan dogs for sale in Drinagh and so headed for Drinagh to purchase a new puppy to replace Rog and give to me as a surprise. Once he came home with the new puppy it was love at first sight. We named him Ron, who we were told was a replica of our lovely Rog. As Ron grew it was clear that he was in no way like our previous dog and was much smaller with a hairy coat to Rogs’ glossy coat, but with the same beautiful temperament as Rog. Ron rules our home and our lives.

Attachment to breed

Having being given my first black and tan dog after Christmas 2006, I fell in love with the breed. The little dog was discarded after Christmas and was left thrown out with the rubbish once the festive season was over. A friend of mine told me about the dog and the circumstances he was in. Being out in the pouring rain for three days, alone, hungry and frightened. I was asked if I would take him in as I lost my previous dog a few months before and I was looking for a good replacement dog. My husband went and collected him and once I saw him it was love at first sight. A beautiful black and tan puppy who looked as if he was painted with a brush. All tan under neath a top coat of shiny black, even when he lifted his tail the under part of which was also tan. We called him Rog and had him for six and a half happy years losing him to cancer in 2013. To say my heart was broken does not describe the loneliness I felt at his departure. My husband went to Drinagh having seen black and tan pups for sale and as the house was so empty without our Rog. After seeing the pup, money changed hands and our new addition to the family was on his way home to Cork. We named him Ron. Ron is a much smaller black and tan and had a different type of coat. He is totally different to Rog except for his lovely black and tan colouring. He has his own character and now rules the house and us.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
